Virginia > Fairfax County > Alexandria and Mount Vernon

The southern half of Alexandria is part of Fairfax County (not to be confused with the City of Alexandria). Along the east is the southern half of the famous Mount Vernon Trail that runs between the Potomac River and the scenic George Washington Memorial Parkway. This beautiful route takes you from Old Town, Alexandria to George Washinton’s Mount Vernon. 

At the southern tip of the Parkway is the Mount Vernon Estate, home of America’s first president, George Washington. George Washington’s Mount Vernon is one of the most visited historic sites in the U.S. When you are here, be sure to stop by George Washington’s Distillery and Gristmill, which brings to life the colonial-era business of whiskey making and milling.

Alexandria is also home to Fort Belvoir Army Base and Fort Hunt Park.
